According to Adobe, 38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content or layout is unattractive

A good website needs to showcase your product or services and convert the visitor into a prospect or customer. A well-designed site combined with a strong UX (user experience) can increase your conversion rate percentage.

Below are 4 tips to keep in mind when building your next site. Our Cleveland Web Design Firm looked at local sites we liked to help visualize what to do and what no to do.

1. Make Strong Use of Homepage Slider

With a WordPress site; many people stick with a homepage slider.  A mistake we see too often is the homepage slider will include an image that takes up a lot of space but lacks a clear call-to-action, wasting coveted real estate above the fold.

Example 1

In the example below, Apex Dermatology, a Cleveland dermatologist, does a great job listing of listing call-to-actions prominently in the homepage slider, which includes the following:

  • Office Locations
  • Appointments
  • Doctors
  • Pay Bill Online
  • Events & Offer

2. Prominently Display Contact Information

Make your phone number or email (your call-to-actions) more prominent at the top of the site on the main navigation.  Too often, we see these call-to-actions small and difficult to find.

APEX Skin once again does a great job showcasing the “Schedule Appointment” and phone number in the top right of the navigation.

According to Marketing Land, more than half of the people who visit leave in fewer than 15 seconds. It’s important to make it easy for the visitor to get in contact with your business with a simple and prominent navigation.

Below is an example of a company, B-Level, with three core services (concrete repair, foundation repair and basement waterproofing). Not only do they have a strong call-to-action with the phone number and email, they make it easy for a visitor to find the service they are interested and learn more by clicking into the respective page.

We worked with B-Level to remove a clunky homepage slider that didn’t convey all of the services they offered and made sure to include a strong call-to-action. This enhanced the user experience, which makes it easier for your website visitors and also helps with SEO!

3. Mobile Optimized

According to BrightEdge, 57% of all U.S. online traffic now comes from smartphones and tablets.

Don’t forget to make your call-to-actions easy to access on mobile.

While we raved about APEX’s layout on desktop, on mobile, there are improvements that can be made.

The logo is large on mobile, which doesn’t give enough space for a phone or email icon to be present. You can see the phone number gets pushed down below the primary image, making it hard to find. Additionally, you can see on mobile the homepage slider doesn’t include any text, which lacks a clear message.

4. More Personality

Each business has a unique story to tell. Your website is the perfect place to do this. Don’t forget to add personality onto your site so your business stands out versus competitors.

Spangenberg Shibley & Liber LLP does a good job including an image above the fold of their entire team, which showcases personality.

Strong Personalization on Homepage Slider

Below are some tips to add more personality onto your site:

  • Add pictures that aren’t stock photos
    • Hiring a photographer will do wonders
  • Hire a journalist or writing expert to interview a key stakeholder within your business
    • This will help bring your story to life in a compelling manner
  • Showcase your expertise
    • List out awards, honors and recognitions to establish authority

Conclusion

There are many elements that go into a successful website design project. Analyzing the four website design tips we mentioned above will go a long way in improving the layout and driving more conversions.
